Local knowledge

Living in Centurion, Montana & Pretoria North

Centurion and the northern suburbs of Pretoria have the most affordable villages in the capital. Lyttelton and Die Hoewes have long-running community villages such as Protea and Lofdal, with two-bedroom units listed around R1.25 million to R1.3 million. Montana, Sinoville and Akasia in the north have Zambezi, Bergvallei, Montana Retirement Village and the Eden villages, and Rietfontein has Trans-50's Jakaranda Park and Jakaranda Park Retirement Village. Retire at Midstream, Midstream's own village with frail and dementia care, sits at the top of the market.

Hospitals: Netcare Unitas and Mediclinic Midstream serve Centurion, Netcare Montana and Mediclinic Legae the north, and Life Eugene Marais is between them. OR Tambo is 35 to 45 minutes from Centurion via the R21 and about an hour from Akasia.

This is where Pretoria families look when a pensioner needs a safe, Afrikaans-speaking community rather than a resort. Many of the homes are run by the SAVF, Residentia or church foundations and take the state pension. Our frail care costs in Gauteng guide explains the subsidised route.

About frail care

Frail care is round-the-clock nursing for older people who can no longer manage daily activities on their own. Care is given by registered nurses, enrolled nurses and care workers, and most facilities also offer short-term respite and post-hospital recovery stays.

Are there subsidised homes in Pretoria North?

How do I know if my parent needs frail care?

Frail care is usually needed when someone needs hands-on help with several daily activities, such as bathing, dressing, getting out of bed or eating, or needs nursing supervision for medication or a medical condition. A GP or a facility's nursing manager can do an assessment.

Does medical aid pay for frail care?

Generally no. Medical schemes may cover a short post-hospital stay in a step-down facility, but long-term frail care is normally paid privately. Check your parent's specific scheme and plan.

Can we try frail care before committing?

Many facilities offer respite stays of a week or more. This is a good way to see the care, and for your parent to get used to the place.
