The North Coast is where KwaZulu-Natal's retirement market has moved. In ten years the strip from Umhlanga Ridge to Ballito has gained Evergreen Umhlanga Ridge, Shoreline Sibaya with its TotalCare centre, the 260-unit Mount Edgecombe Retirement Village with a R100 million care centre, Twilanga and Pioneer Park in Umhlanga, and Palm Lakes and Coral Cove at Ballito. Salt Rock now has the third-highest average retirement property value in the country.
Hospitals are excellent and close: Netcare Umhlanga, Gateway Private and Busamed Gateway at Umhlanga Ridge, and Netcare Alberlito in Ballito. King Shaka International is 15 minutes from Umdloti and 25 from both Umhlanga and Ballito, which makes it the easiest part of KZN for children flying in from Gauteng.
Prices are the highest in the province. Studios at Shoreline Sibaya were launched at R1.55 million, two-bedrooms from R2.55 million and three-bedrooms from R4.8 million; Mount Edgecombe units start around R2 million to R2.5 million. Summer humidity is real. For the full comparison with Durban and the South Coast, read where to retire in KwaZulu-Natal.
