Local knowledge

Living in Midrand & Waterfall

Midrand did not exist as a retirement destination twenty years ago. Today Waterfall Hills and Waterfall Valley, two mature-lifestyle estates inside Waterfall City, hold several hundred homes for over-50s with a frail care centre, 24-hour nurse, doctor's rooms and Netcare Waterfall City Hospital inside the wider estate. Retire at Midstream, on the Centurion side of the N1, adds frail and dementia care next to Mediclinic Midstream.

The appeal is simple: children in Sandton and Pretoria are each 25 minutes away, the Gautrain stops at Midrand, and OR Tambo is 30 minutes along the R21. Prices are high. Houses at Waterfall Valley sell for R3.5 million to R8 million with rentals of R23,000 to R30,000 a month, and Waterfall Hills is in the same bracket.

For families who can afford it, this is the Gauteng equivalent of the Helderberg: everything on one secure estate, with the hospital a golf cart ride away. For a cheaper option nearby, Highveld Gardens in Halfway House and the Centurion villages across the highway are worth a look.

About frail care

Frail care is round-the-clock nursing for older people who can no longer manage daily activities on their own. Care is given by registered nurses, enrolled nurses and care workers, and most facilities also offer short-term respite and post-hospital recovery stays.

Questions families ask

Frail Care in Midrand & Waterfall

Is there frail care at Waterfall Hills?

Yes. Waterfall Hills has a frail care facility in Waterfall Manor, a nurse on site at all times, doctor's rooms and 24-hour emergency response. Waterfall Valley residents have reciprocal access to the Waterfall Hills care centre.

How much do homes at Waterfall Valley cost?

The estate quotes R3.5 million to R8 million to buy, with no transfer duty, and R23,000 to R30,000 a month to rent.

Which hospital serves Midrand?

Netcare Waterfall City Hospital is inside Waterfall City. Mediclinic Midstream is ten minutes north, and Netcare Sunninghill fifteen minutes south.

How do I know if my parent needs frail care?

Frail care is usually needed when someone needs hands-on help with several daily activities, such as bathing, dressing, getting out of bed or eating, or needs nursing supervision for medication or a medical condition. A GP or a facility's nursing manager can do an assessment.

Does medical aid pay for frail care?

Generally no. Medical schemes may cover a short post-hospital stay in a step-down facility, but long-term frail care is normally paid privately. Check your parent's specific scheme and plan.

Can we try frail care before committing?

Many facilities offer respite stays of a week or more. This is a good way to see the care, and for your parent to get used to the place.
