Living in Pretoria East

Pretoria East has the densest concentration of retirement villages in the country. Along the Lynnwood and Garsfontein roads and out to Equestria and The Willows are dozens of established villages: Faerie Glen Renaissance, Glenhaven and Haven Village in Garsfontein, Willow Haven, Protea and Masonic Haven in Die Wilgers, Pretoria Oos Aftreeoord and Equestria Village, and the newer Featherwood, Waterkloof Marina and The Retreat at Hazeldean. Olympus and Equestria also host a cluster of frail care and dementia homes.

Private hospitals are everywhere: Life Wilgers, Netcare Pretoria East, Mediclinic Kloof, Life Groenkloof and Netcare Jakaranda, with Steve Biko Academic as the provincial centre. OR Tambo is about 45 minutes by the R21.

Prices are among the most reasonable in any metro. One-bedroom units in older villages sell from R690,000 in Lynnwood and about R1 million in Garsfontein, two-bedrooms from R1.3 million to R2.8 million, and new estates from about R1.4 million to R5 million. Many of the older villages are community-run with frail care on site. See retirement village costs in Gauteng for what the levy covers.

About old age homes

An old age home (also called a home for the aged or residential care home) provides a room, meals and personal care in one place. Many in the Western Cape are run by churches or non-profit organisations, and some receive a subsidy from the Department of Social Development, which can make them more affordable.
