Key points
- Pick a town that is easy for family to reach.
- Plan for the care your parent may need in five years, not only today.
- Register on frail care waiting lists early.
- Check medical scheme networks in the new area.
Many families relocating to the Western Cape bring a parent with them, or move a parent closer once they have settled. Planning ahead makes the move far less stressful for everyone.
Choose the town around access, not only lifestyle
Think about who will visit and how. A village near Cape Town International or George Airport is much easier for family flying in from Gauteng or overseas. Check the drive to the nearest hospital with an emergency unit too.
Match the care level to the next five years
A parent who is independent today may need care later. A village with frail care on site, and priority access for residents, avoids a second move at a difficult time.
Get on waiting lists early
Frail care beds in popular towns such as Hermanus and Somerset West often have waiting lists. Registering interest costs little, and some villages require it.
Paperwork to sort out
Gather medical records, a current medication list and a letter from their GP. Check whether their medical scheme network includes doctors and hospitals in the new town. Make sure an enduring arrangement is in place for someone to help with finances if needed, and update their will.
Visit before you decide
Visit at least two or three places, ideally at a mealtime, and ask to speak to residents. Our care-type pages list the questions worth asking.
